Supporting your child’s educational needs at home can be in the form of school holiday entertainment, extension and stretching activities and home schooling. Whatever your needs, there are lots of support options available online. If you’re home schooling amidst the COVID-19 situation currently, it’s also important to remember that you’re a parent and not expected to be a trained educator and teacher. That is why you should use the available support and guidance, including the varied resources and ideas available.
The Department of Education have some excellent early childhood resources available, which you can find below. They also have a very helpful Learning from home for parents resource that can provide some excellent support and tips.
- Play-based learning for pre-schoolers – provides suggestions for good structured and unstructured play experiences for 3 – 5 year olds
- How to build literacy skills from birth to year 2 – includes tips on how to help build children’s skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing
- How to build numeracy skills from birth to year 2 – includes tips on how to build children’s skills in maths, measurement and patterns
- Building STEM skills for children – includes ways to engage children with STEM related experiences. It refers you to the first national STEM Programme Index (SPI 2016) that includes in-class, after school, holiday and online activities and resources for range of students.
Raising Children Network also has a range of learning activities for pre-schoolers. It includes tips and ideas as well as videos of drawing, writing, storytelling, counting and other activities that can be done at home.
Scholastic Learn At Home provides 20 days worth of active learning journey activities for ages from pre-kinder through year 9.
KiwiCo have created a great library of STEAM activities for 5-9 year olds as well as daily DIY activities.
Hands On As We Grow have heaps of free resources for all age groups.
